Speeding and dangerous driving are regularly reported to the Parish Council, and we know from when the police installed a covert speed measuring device in Upper New Road in 2017, that speeds well in excess of 50mph were being recorded (101mph in one case). I’ve worked with members of the My Cheddar community group and the police, to establish a SpeedWatch scheme in the village. Recently it has become difficult to find new SpeedWatch team members but if you are interested in being involved, email firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, Cheddar used to be on the rota for installation of Somerset Council’s Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) but they terminated this scheme as part of cutbacks. The Highways and Open Spaces committee is therefore looking at buying our own SIDs for the parish, which will hopefully appear on a roadside near you, in the coming months. I’m keen that we buy the extra data capture modules so we can have our own evidence of the need for traffic calming measures.
